Oleg Lysheha

Oleg Lysheha (1949) – a Ukrainian poet and translator, the author of an interesting prose. Lysheha entered the Lviv University in 1968. Over the last year of studies he was expelled from the University for publication of the informal anthology “Skrynya” (“Trunk”), they officially banned him to publish the books from 1972 to 1988. In 1989 he published his poetical anthology “Velykyi mist” (“Big Bridge”).

In 2000 Oleg Lysheha and his translator James Brasfild received the American PEN reward for the best translated poetry book of the year. The bilingual edition includes a mystery “Druzhe Li Bo, Brate Du Fu” (“Friend Li Bo, Brother Du Fu”). Lysheha is the first Ukrainian poet, who was awarded this prize.
