Oleksandr Irvanets was born in January 24, 1961 in Lviv. He spent his childhood spent in Volhyn.

In 1966 his family moved to Rivne. He graduated from normal school in Dubn0 (1980) and the Moscow Literary Institute of Gorkyi (1989). He worked as a teacher, served in the army.  Then Oleksandr worked as a journalist, head of the literary part of the theater. Now he is a research worker in the Ukrainian Center for Cultural Studies.

Together with Juri Andrukhovych and Victor Neborak they founded a poetic group “Bu-Ba-Bu” (“burlesque-dancer-extravaganza) in spring, 1985. His first collection of poems was published in 1987. Today he is the author of over 20 books. Some of them were published in translation into Polish, Croatian, Byelorussian languages. Oleksandr translates  into Ukrainian – from Polish, Russian and Byelorussian. He published 7 books of translations from these languages, among them there are three books translated from Polish. There are many of his translations in magazines, almanacs and anthologies.

He was a grant holder of numerous foundations in Germany, Poland, Austria, Latvia and the USA.
Lives in Rivne and Irpin near Kyiv.
